A taste of the South

There is lots of great food to eat here. Anything you could imagine. And they'll deliver most of it right to your door--for free! Still, there's nothing like a little home cookin', such as the creamed corn mom made for us when she was here last week.

In honor of my native South, here's a recipe for homemade vanilla ice cream with fresh peaches (I don't like peach cobbler, so here's my substitute "peach dish".) D has been craving homemade ice cream, so he's getting it this week. Yes, we actually went to the trouble of bringing our ice cream maker with us, and we actually have enough cabinet space for it. Anyway, vanilla ice cream with peaches (Garnish with your favorite fruit or eat plain. I'm grabbing peaches from my curbside produce stand.)

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
Ingredients:
2 eggs
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 quart milk (4 cups)
1 large can evaporated milk
1 tablespoon vanilla

Directions:
Separate egg whites from yolks. Mix yoks, sugar, milks and vanilla together and pour into ice cream churn. Beat egg whites and spoon in to churn. Turn on the churn and wait patiently for sweet goodness!

Also, in honor of my new home in the Big Apple, here is my sister's recipe for amazingly yummy apple crisp. So easy to make, so tasty with ice cream (homemade vanilla, anyone?). Perfect for the fall/winter, but really anytime.

Apple Crisp
Ingredients:
6 large apples, peeled, cored and sliced (McIntosh or Washington work great)
9x9 greased pan

3/4 cup self-rising flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 stick margarine, softened
nutmeg to taste

Directions:
Place the apple slices in the bottom of the greased 9x9 pan. Combine the other ingredients and sprinkle over the apple slices. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.

Enjoy!
